Funding Announcement: DfE to review school maintenance funding
On Wednesday, Schools Week announced the DfE’s plan to review the school maintenance funding system.
Comments from senior DfE directors have confirmed that they will be looking at how they deliver maintenance funding, School Condition Allocation (SCA) and the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF).
This comes after the new government ordered the review amid concerns that the current set up is ‘too complicated’ and not as ‘accessible as it needs to be’.
Despite potential changes it has been emphasised that the government is still committed to improving the condition of school buildings with an intention to keep funding consistent. At the Education Estates Conference, the education minister Stephen Morgan revealed that ‘prioritising sustainable maintenance and retrofit’ will also be part of their approach.
This year’s upcoming CIF bid round is likely to follow a similar format to recent years, with a review of the process expected for the next bidding round in 2025.
