Bath Abbey Footprint Project wins a RIBA National Award 2024

The Bath Abbey Footprint Project is one of only 26 winners at the RIBA National Awards 2024. The winning projects range in scale from all corners of the United Kingdom and represent the UK’s best new architecture.
A common theme in this year’s winners include the restoration and adaption of existing buildings through intelligent design and working closely with local communities.
The pioneering initiative at Bath Abbey is an exemplar of such themes, through the preservation of the church’s ancient past whilst innovatively transforming for the future.
Extensive repair and conservation have saved the historic floor from collapse and several parts of the Abbey have been opened up to be used and enjoyed by the community, visitors and the congregation. The Footprint Project has increased the Abbey’s energy-efficiency with underfloor heating powered by renewable energy from Bath’s hot springs and new LED lighting has been installed.
RIBA President Muyiwa Oki commented:
“The sheer breadth of work is quite astounding, with large infrastructure schemes sitting alongside high-quality detailed smaller projects. This is a testament to the standard of architecture in the UK right now, as we maintain a sense of ambition and consider how design must evolve to meet future needs.”
